New Harpenden Secondary School

You may have heard or seen in the press that Herts County Council is proposing to build a new secondary school at Batford, Harpenden that would become the nearest secondary school for Kimpton.

To secure the best outcome for the school children in our parish it is important that community support for the new school is demonstrated by signing the e-petition created by the Harpenden Parents’ Group on Herts County Council web site.

Kimpton Parish Council urges you all to sign the e-petition by following this link.

Please can you forward the link to anyone else you know who may be interested in supporting the campaign. It is important that Kimpton is well represented on this petition.

In addition to the petition, there will be other opportunities to support the campaign. Letters to the press and Herts County Council continue to be important as personal letters will be counted regardless of the content/quality/length and be used as evidence in the future planning process.

If you would like to see more information on the proposals this can be found on

Please share this information as widely as possible throughout our community as securing school places for our children has been a running sore for families in our Parish for years and it is most definitely going to get much worse – even before any new school is built. Delay in the process is not attractive.

One Response to “New Harpenden Secondary School”

  1. Diane Ewart says:

I fully support a new secondary school for the villages and Harpenden. I understand that it is likely to have to be built on green belt land. However I question whether the council is going for the best site and also their lack of consultation. Where is the local voice in all of this?

Perhaps, to provide an even handed response you could also publicise the Right School Right Site petition which supports a new school but also putting it in the right place. After all, look what the councillors got wrong in the past about the need for local secondary places and the decision to close Wheathampstead Secondary. The alternative proposition they were considering at the time was closing Sir John Lawes! Less haste and more care/consultation is what we need – I know a new school is needed asap, but it needs to be in the right place …and this just might not be it.

For example, the council have a reserve site allocated for this school that they already own – not big enough in itself but adjacent to another parcel of land under consideration. I am not convinced they have properly evaluated all the options.
